Frequently Asked Questions:

How can I tell if an ERP system is really pure Microsoft?

One characteristic is common to all software: the software must be installed – somewhere. While it is readily possible to put a modern face on old technology, the software installation process must land all the components of the software product on the target computer hardware. Even web browser-based and Web Service applications need to be installed; they’re installed on a server. As the licensee of an ERP software product, you are entitled to ask exactly what software components will be installed on your hardware systems. These questions should be asked when you are shopping for your new system to allow you to learn the true nature of the technology you are purchasing.

You should ask for a full manifest of the application; the list of technical ingredients of the product. In asking for this list, you can also ask for an explanation of the type and purpose of each component. Don’t just ask about the files that comprise the software product, but also ask specifically about “runtimes” and “services” and any other support packages that will be required to be present on your systems. Find out the purpose of each component. In this way, you can discover the technologies involved. Not only do the answers to these questions indicate the ease with which you will be able to install and maintain the product, but they also give clues as to how much old technology is at the core and how easily the product will be able to adapt to new and better technologies that appear in the future. Learning exactly which technologies lurk within also helps you estimate the ease with which you can make custom modifications should you choose to do so.
