Web Services allow one party to broadcast information or expose a service over the Internet for other parties to consume or subscribe to. As the Internet spreads to hand-held wireless devices, cell-phones, and even the appliances in your home, Web Services will be one way these devices exchange information and invoke services on one another. Web Service technology will allow a much greater sharing of information. Web Services will shrink the world even further. Two things can be said about Web Services today: the technology is still very young and not as robust as it needs to be to fulfill the promise, and .NET makes it easier to write, deploy, and consume Web Services. Unfortunately, many of the other huge benefits of .Net are getting drowned out in all the hype surrounding Web Services.
